Kidney for Sale!

Posted by: joselito capariño on: March 27, 2008

I just have watched the news in our local broadcast media and there I found out so many cases of Filipinos selling their own kidneys for about Php100,000 to Php200,000 to those who are in dire need of kidneys, some are foreigners who have their kidney transplant operated in the country. Reality indeed, these fellow Filipinos have done this for money, for their own personal needs – to sustain their daily needs like most Filipinos do in the midst of poverty. Worse, this scenario of kidney transactions is also present even in front of the National Kidney and Transplant Institute.

This is not new to us. But the mere fact this condition appears to continue in the process manifests a deeper problem. Many Filipinos have, especially the poor and desperate for easy money, opted to sell their kidneys for immediate relief: to support their basic needs, to help relatives who are in hospital for medication, to send their sons and daughters to school, and so on and so forth. And this continuing cases will be in our trying times unless the government and concerned groups address such problem. The bottom line is these people needed to do so for their economic needs, without knowing the adverse effects that may be incurred on their health.

It’s a sad thing to note that even kidney today becomes an object for sale. It has now being compared to a house and lot, a condo unit, pets, among others that are in demand in the market. When will this transaction end? Nobody can predict. No one can suspect.
