For Women Empowerment?

What does a Sarah Palin choice for John McCain’s vice-president speak of the role of women in society, especially their primordial part in local and international politics? Alaska Governor Sarah Palin would be a great leader, can be a good Vice-President of the United States of America. She has that outstanding record of public service to speak of. That is, if she wins. That is, if she hurdles the tedious political campaign in the US…

In the international arena, we have a long list of world leaders, women leadership that somehow contributed a lot to the realm of public policy and international affairs. Much more on the issues of gender in politics and governance. We have Benazir Bhutto, Pakistan; Mary Robinson, Ireland; Khaleda Zia, Bangladesh; Vigdis Finnbogadottir, Iceland; Tansu Ciller, Turkey; Eugenia Charles, Dominica; Violeta Chamorro, Nicaragua; Gro Harlem Bruntland, Norway; and former leaders Corazon Aquino, Philippines; Sirimavo Bandaranaike, Sri Lanka; Edith Cresson, France; Maria Liberia-Peters, Netherlands Antilles; Kazimiera Prunskiene, Lithuania; Hanna Suchoka, Poland; Margaret Thatcher, Great Britain.

Sarah Palin

If she becomes the Vice-President of the United States, would that have a significant impact on the US-Philippines foreign relations? Thanks God the present President of the Philippines is set to end her term in 2010!!!

But let’s come to think of it. If Gov. Palin would run here in the Philippines, she has the biggest edge from among her potential rivals. She has the face, she has the charm, she has the beauty, and she has the intelligence and track record (being the least consideration!!!). And of course, given she has the MONEY. Maybe Senator Loren Legarda would be out of the scene.

Anyway, the Sarah Palin vs Hillary Clinton is no longer the case. Again, for the sake of intellectual discussion and academics, this isn’t a battle of sexes nor an issue of gender. This is a fair fight of the platform and ideologies for a democratic electoral process. After all, the people will decide the fate of America. And this election will also determine the future foreign relations of the Government of the Republic of the Philippines and the government of the United States of America.

A relation that has long been in hiding beneath one’s wings and in shadows of doubts and vested interests.
